West Salem Waste Stream Reduction Program...

WEEKLY GARBAGE PICK-UP


    Please take advantage of the new Household Hazardous Material Facility located at the La Crosse County Landfill Complex on Hwy 16. For hours and information please call 785-9999


    Garbage is picked up every Monday and Tuesday. North of Garland Street and North of Highway 16 extended west of West Avenue is picked up on Mondays. Residences located South of this line will be picked up on Tuesdays. Only refuse placed at the curb in CLEAR plastic bags will be collected. No recyclable materials may be included in these bags. All garbage must be placed curbside by 6:00 a.m.

    All general garbage along with the following NON RECYCLABLE items should be placed in these clear plastic bags: light bulbs, dishes, drinking glasses, window glass, mirrors, ceramic containers, plastic containers, paint cans, aerosol cans, bottle caps, foil pie plates, magazines, junk mail, books, shiny paper, and cardboard. Cardboard boxes should be crushed and put out with garbage.

    ANY GARBAGE OR REFUSE NOT PLACED AS DESCRIBED ABOVE WILL BE REJECTED BY THE COLLECTOR.

    CLEAR PLASTIC GARBAGE BAGS CAN BE PURCHASED FROM AREA MERCHANTS.

MOTOR OIL

    If you change you own oil, DO NOT throw it away! Waste oil is estimated to contribute 40% of the pollution in America's waterways. Most full service gas stations and automotive repair centers will accept used motor oil.

RECYCLING PROGRAM

    All Village residents, except those who reside in apartment buildings exceeding 3 dwelling units, have been supplied with an 18 gallon recycling bin. The following recyclables are to be placed in the bin and set out on your regular garbage collection day by 6:00 a.m. for pickup:

    JARS & BOTTLES

    Brown, Green and Clear Glass Food/Beverage Containers
    • remove metal rims/lids
    • rinse clean; no need to remove labels
    • place loose in you recycling bin

    TIN FOOD CANS

    Food Cans Only
    • rinse clean
    • remove paper labels
    • remove both ends if possible and flatten
    • place loose in you recycling bin

    ALUMINUM BEVERAGE CANS

    Beverage Cans Only
    • rinse clean
    • drain liquid
    • flatten if possible and place loose in your recycling bin

    NEWSPRINT

    Newspapers Only
    • keep newsprint dry; do not put out on rainy days
    • remove shiny inserts and throw away
    • place newspaper in brown bags in your recycling bin or tie in bundles

    IF AN ITEM DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE ABOVE GUIDE, DON'T PUT IT IN THE GREEN RECYCLING BIN.

    PLEASE TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR GREEN RECYCLING BIN. THE VILLAGE PROVIDED THE FIRST BINS FREE, BUT THERE WILL BE A CHARGE FOR REPLACEMENT BINS.

LARGE ARTICLE PICKUP

  1. LARGE and/or BULKY items (excluding appliances and used tires) will be collected the second Wednesday of each month October through March. April through September, large articles will be collected on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday os each month.All items must be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. Large items must not exceed 60 lbs. Carpeting must not be longer than 8' nor exceed 60 lbs. Small amounts of lumber or similar material will be picked up if tied in a secure bundle and does not exceed 4' or 60 lbs. TV's and computers are large articles. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING USABLE ITEMS TO CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS.
  2. The Village will provide a special collection of APPLIANCES and USED TIRES on April 21, June 9, and August 11, 2008. All items must be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. on dates shown. The following fees will be assessed and must be paid at the Village Office PRIOR TO COLLECTION DAY:
    • LARGE APPLIANCES... $20.00 EACH
    • USED CAR TIRES... $2.00 EACH
    • USED TRUCK TIRES... $10.00 EACH
  3. Individuals generating construction or demolition waste must rent a dumpster from a refuse disposal company. Examples are roofing, bathtubs, windows, siding, sheet rock, lumber, cabinets, concrete, asphalt and brick. This materials WILL NOT be picked up.

YARD & GARDEN WASTE

  1. YARD and GARDEN WASTES will not be collected during the normal waste collection or by the Village of West Salem.
  2. All residents are encouraged to reduce the amount of yard waste generated by either mulching grass and leaves into the lawn or by operating backyard a composting program.
  3. A disposal site for leaves, grass clippings and garden waste refuse ONLY is located on West Avenue just north of the Village Garage. All bags and containers must be emptied and disposed of properly. Absolutely no garbage or debris.
  4. TREE LIMBS and BRUSH will be collected curbside on the First and Third Tuesdays of each month from April through October. Limbs should be of 6' lengths or less and set out by 7:00 a.m. on collections days.
  5. CHRISTMAS TREES will be collected curbside during the First and Third week of January. (Remove ornaments and bags.)
