WHAT DOES THE APPEARANCE COMMITTEE DO? The Appearance Committee is one of four work sub-committees which was formed out of the Village People Forum in September 2001. The committee meets every two weeks and is comprised of volunteers from West Salem. Purpose: "Our purpose is to educate ourselves and the community so we can advocate change regarding maintenance and historic preservation of our buildings, landscaping, lighting and signage." One might ask, "What does this mean and how will it happen?" Simply it means, we want to improve the overall appearance of our downtown. In order for this to happen we need to first become better informed community members. We need to educate ourselves in a wider sense in regard to both "design guidelines," and as neighbors getting to know our community. The questions do expand as we continue to define our goals. How have other communities addressed their revitalization efforts? What is already in the works locally? What does West Salem as a community really want? What will work for West Salem? We envision revitalization occurring in many ways involving both small and large projects. The "Light Up The Village" with white lights was a more immediate project, which everyone could see and participate in. We also envision goals that will involve more extensive planning and resources. The more the Appearance Committee meets to share ideas and dreams, the more the possibilities expand and become more real! As we go through this defining and envisioning process, we must understand it is a walk and not a run! We are a group of neighbors walking together to improve the quality of our life as a community. We invite anyone who would like to join us in the revitalization to please contact Marilyn Franzini at 786-1909. Your involvement can be whatever works for you. The energy and enthusiasm of the Appearance Committee is fueled by the dreams of what West Salem's downtown can be . . . the very heart of our community!
